you would either have to change the dimensions of the panel to surround just your figure, or use very unobtrusive colours that provide enough contrast to highlight your figure.

perhaps a gradiated background? I like it the way it is; however, it does seem a little unfinished.

Don't go green, you are right about the wood making your image stand out, and it provides great colour contrast.

You might just want to leave it the way it is, or consider the suggestions.
